They say that a woman's hair is her crowning glory. For a lucky few, their hair looks gorgeous just as nature made it. The rest of us have to resort to colouring, perming, teasing, volumizing, braiding, clarifying, curling, straightening, or highlights, using sprays, conditioners, gels, diffusers, extensions, curling irons, rollers and pins.
The basis for a stylish head of hair is a good cut, for which you need a professional. Some of the more drastic treatments are probably also best left to professionals, but routine maintenance can be done at home with a blow dryer, curling iron or rollers. By far the simplest of these are rollers, especially heated hair rollers, which are quick to use, and can easily, fit into your morning routine. Plug them in while you brush your teeth, roll your hair and let them cool while you have breakfast, take them out, shake your head and you are ready to go.
Heated hair rollers work especially well with long hair. As few as five large rollers can take care of the whole head, and the result is extra volume and cascades of soft curls. Shorter hair requires smaller rollers and more of them. Whatever length your hair, the procedure for using heated hair rollers is the same. They work best on hair that is not too soft and silky, so prepare your hair with a firm-hold spray. A volumizing mousse can also be used. Begin at centre front and wrap the hair around the roller towards the back of the head. Make sure that all shorter strands are tucked in. Continue moving backwards towards the nape, then do the sides starting at the top. Spray again, and leave to cool for 10-15 minutes. Remove the rollers and brush through to remove any gaps or partings.
There are many, many types of heated hair rollers on the market. They vary enormously so choosing the right set can be a challenge, but not impossible if you let your hair style guide you. The first decision is how many rollers you need, and what sizes. If you are just looking for lift, or very loose curls, the a few jumbo rollers will be enough. Shorter hair and tighter curls will need a full set with a range of sizes.
Some heated hair rollers use a system that heats the core of the roller meaning that they are cool to handle and the heat is diffused once they are in place. Some systems have dual heat settings for looser or tighter curls. Most, but not all, have a light to show when maximum heat has been reached. Rollers are kept in place either by a spring-loaded plastic clamp (which can double as a pony-tail holder) or a u-shaped metal pin. The latter work well with many smaller rollers, but they can sometimes heat up uncomfortably. Another consideration is the weight of the set, which could be important if you travel and want to take your rollers with you.
